The Colombian Navy reported on Friday the seizure of the biggest narco-submarine in the background of the South American nation.
It is a semi-submersible, whose dimensions are 30 meters long by 3 meters wide, and “it is the largest intercepted while sailing with alkaloids since 1993”, the year in which the Colombian Navy seized the first device of this type, the institution indicated. .
The illegal device, which was intercepted in a joint operation with the Colombian Air Force in the Pacific, was carrying more than three tons of cocaine, reports RT.
At the time of the interception, the Colombian sailors verified that the semi-submersible “had begun to sink” due to an ingress of water in the engine area, the Navy detailed.
Crew
On board the device were three crew members, Colombian nationals, ages 63, 54 and 45, who stated that they were forced by a drug trafficking organization to embark and take the semi-submersible with the alkaloid to Central America.
“After an inspection, the military personnel recovered 102 packages with the drug cache and tried to refloat the semi-submersible through different naval maneuvers, without any success, which is why it was sunk so as not to affect navigation in the area,” added the Navy.
The subjects and the seized drugs were transferred to the district of Tumaco, in the department of Nariño, in southwestern Colombia, where they were placed under the orders of the competent authorities.
According to the calculations of the Colombian Navy, this seizure meant a blow to the drug trafficking organization for 103 million dollars.
So far in 2023, the Pacific Naval Force has intercepted a total of four semi-submersibles sailing with alkaloids.
