On December 16, 2014, the United States Olympic Committee announced that it would bid to host the 2024 Summer Olympics. The bidding cities will be selected from Boston, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Washington, hoping to bring this world event to the United States again after 28 years.
The US Olympic Committee stated that the final bid city will be determined in mid-to-early January 2015. The addition of the United States will make the bid for the 2024 Summer Olympics extremely competitive. Previously, Rome, Italy announced its bid to host the event, and Germany also indicated that Berlin or Hamburg were interested in bidding. "We want to select a city that has the best chance of winning against cities from other countries," said Probst, president of the US Olympic Committee.
The United States has not hosted a Summer Olympics since Atlanta in 1996, and Salt Lake City hosted the Winter Olympics in 2002. The United States' last two Olympic bids both failed. Chicago was eliminated in the first round of voting for the 2016 Olympic Games, with Brazil's Rio de Janeiro ultimately elected. New York was eliminated in the second round of the 2012 Olympic Games bid, and the United States did not participate in the 2020 Summer Olympics bid.
