President Volodymyr Zelensky plans to meet with President Xi Jinping after China has presented 12 points of ideas regarding the Russia-Ukraine war, including peace dialogue.
“I plan to meet with Xi Jinping,” Zelensky said on Friday (24/2), as quoted by AFP .
“This will be a watershed moment for world security.”
Zelensky did not specify when and where he would meet Xi. He only said he hoped China would support a “just peace” and Ukraine.
He wanted to meet with Xi after China released 12 points of ideas on the Russia-Ukraine war, one of which contained calls for peaceful dialogue. According to Zelensky, China starting to talk about Ukraine is progress.
“I believe that the fact that China started talking about Ukraine is not bad. However, questions arise from those words. The question is in the steps and where they are going,” Zelensky said, as reported by Politico .
So far, China has been sparing in statements about the Russia-Ukraine war. They often take a neutral position, but have never criticized the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
Several Western countries also rejected the proposal put forward by China. They warned the Bamboo Curtain country not to get too close to Moscow.
Western countries, particularly the United States, have accused China of intending to supply weapons to Russia. However, China denied and confirmed their position through this idea.
Zelensky also wants to make sure that China will absolutely not supply weapons to Russia in his meeting with Xi Jinping later.
“I really want to believe that China will not supply weapons to Russia. This is very important to me,” Zelensky said.
On that occasion, Zelensky also emphasized that he would consider China's idea if Russia really withdrew all of its troops from Ukraine.
Even so, he felt talks with Russia were, as China had hoped, impossible because he could not talk to “sick people,” referring to President Vladimir Putin.
“However, negotiating a treaty with the sick and killing many is currently impossible,” he said.
